New Fair Labor Standards Act rules are changing the federal guidelines for "exempt employees": employees that are paid a salary and are exempt from having to be paid for overtime work - effective December 1. Come to one of the Chamber's half-day work sessions on Thursday, November 17, to learn what you need to do to comply!

It’s Time To Apply for the Leadership Sheridan County Class of 2017! Leadership Sheridan County is an annual program designed to inspire a new generation to assume leadership roles in our community. This is an intense program intended to prepare individuals from diverse backgrounds to be more connected and influential in the future of Sheridan County.

This past year has been a very active one for the Chamber Ambassadors committee. This group of volunteers serves as the high profile representatives of the Chamber, as they focus on promoting new businesses, conventions, tourism and recreation in the Sheridan area, as well as encouraging progressive growth in established businesses.

The Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce relies heavily on the 200-plus volunteers who serve our organization, either as directors of our board or on one of our many committees. One of our most active committees is the Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) Committee, led by committee chairperson Ken Thorpe, with Powder River Heating and Air Conditioning. The BRE Committee is comprised of member business people who share the common goal of developing new tools and programs to help area businesses grow and prosper, in addition to planning and implementing workforce strategies that will ensure the future employability of our workers and address issues affecting business retention, productivity and economic competitiveness.

President Obama and Labor Secretary Perez announced the publication of the U.S. Department of Labor's final rule updating the overtime regulations, which will automatically extend overtime pay protections to over 4 million workers within the first year of implementation. The new rules focus primarily on updating the salary and compensation levels needed for "Executive, Administrative and Professional workers" to be exempt from overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours in a workweek.

One of our longstanding programs takes place the second Wednesday of each month at our Chamber luncheon. During our most recent luncheon this past week, we were honored to have a top-notch panel of local business owners share their own insights, lessons learned and strategies in operating their businesses. The program focused on how these business owners held true to traditional business values, all the while staying aware of, focused on, and even ahead of, business trends.
