To See and Do in and around Dayton
Hans Kleiber Cabin
This original studio of the late German artist Hans Kleiber is located on Main Street in Dayton. It is staffed by volunteers and features a variety of art related books and materials.
A short drive from Dayton leads to Tongue River Canyon, an outdoor recreation enthusiast’s paradise. A hiking trail leads up the canyon, and the intrepid hiker can follow the trail to the top of the Big Horn Mountains some 15 miles to the west. Local fishermen enjoy first-class trout fishing in the Tongue River, which winds below the spectacular cliff walls of the canyon. The canyon walls feature many bolted and mapped rock climbing routes.
Scenic Driving
Highway 14 west of Dayton offers two distinct and memorable scenic drives; the Bighorn Scenic Byway and the Medicine Wheel Passage (Alternate 14). The Medicine Wheel Passage closes each year at the end of hunting season and reopens around Memorial Day weekend.
Bighorn National Forest
Dayton serves as the gateway to the Bighorn National Forest (Bighorn Mountains), where locals and visitors alike enjoy multiple lakes and reservoirs, 32 campgrounds, 2 scenic byways, 14 picnic areas, 7 lodges, miles of fishing streams, 189,000 acres of wilderness, 1,500 miles of trails, and much more.
