Community Partner Spotlight: Ptolemy Data Systems
What does a first century Egyptian mathematician have to do with the fast paced, technology driven world? Well, that’s what we asked the guys at Ptolemy Data Systems. Ptolemy (pronounced tall-eh-may) is the namesake of Claudius Ptolemy, who originated math theories that gave roots, centuries later, to how computers talk to each other.
Ptolemy Data Systems, a Chamber Platinum Community Partner, is the result of a dream, three entrepreneurs, and a lot of hard work. In 2008, Ryan Mulholland had the idea of starting a data center in Sheridan, and in 2009, Ptolemy was officially incorporated. Ryan initiated a partnership with James Billings and Jesus Rios, who quickly came on board with the idea. Each partner put everything they had on the line for this venture, giving up steady employment and security to see Ptolemy succeed. Then the work began.
From a one-room office, Ptolemy began with a couple of cell phones and laptops. They pre-sold services at first, and then utilized the friends and family plan to purchase key infrastructure to deliver on service contracts. Ptolemy officially launched its Managed IT services in July 2010. By October that same year they merged with Sheridan Computer, going from zero to seven employees in just a few months.
Today Ptolemy employs 14 people in three separate locations – a high security data center (entrance pictured left), a sales and service center now called Sheridan Computer, and a remote office location in Casper, Wyoming.
Ptolemy offers a variety of technology solutions from the data center, including Managed IT, Managed Security, Secure Data Storage, and other cloud services. Sheridan Computer provides computer sales and support. If your business needs IT services, Ptolemy has the expertise to get you going. What a great option for your small business: having first-class technical support at a fraction of the cost of hiring an employee.
The mission at PDS is simple: “Be the invisible hero.” If they are doing their job correctly, customers should never know they are there. They strive to solve problems before problems arise, by proactively monitoring their customers’ networks.
